Auditions for The Foothills Have Talent!  Presented by CAST.  CALLING ALL TALENTED FOOTHILLS RESIDENTS!  Singers, Dancers, Musicians, Comedians, Magicians, Gymnastic Groups – Whatever Your Special Talent!  Auditions are open to all ages, but no professional acts will be allowed to audition.  The entry fee is $5 for groups of 1 – 10; $10 for groups of 10 or more.  A total of 20 contestants will be chosen to compete in the final event in June.  $1,500 First Prize, $1,000 Second Prize, and $500 for Audience Favorite.

Catawba Valley Community College’s Potters’ Workshop will host an open house on Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to view the unique facility and meet with staff and students. Demonstrations will be given throughout the day by teachers at the Workshop, and participating students. Guests will be offered the opportunity to “step up” to the wheel, and try turning clay on their own. Guests will be able to take home pieces they make; however, they will not be glazed or fired. Additionally, student work will be on display and light refreshments will be served. The open house is free and open to the public.

Documentary & Discussion at Hickory Museum of Art Sunday, May 20 2:30 - 3:30 PM - Program Presented by Sandy Rusak - Free Admission - Sandy Rusak, Director of Education at the North Carolina Museum of Art, will lead a conversation about the work of contemporary artist, El Anatsui. Using 8 video shorts that explain and document the artist’s work, Rusak will introduce attendees to one of today’s most renowned contemporary artists. His work is featured in the exhibition, “El Anatsui: When I Last Wrote to You about Africa” on view at the NCMA through July 29, 2012.
